With just one day in Athens, it’s best to start early to beat the heat and make the most of your time.

Acropolis of Athens (8:00 – 10:30)

Kick off your day in Athens by heading to the Acropolis, the city’s most iconic ancient site and a must-visit on any itinerary.

Explore the Parthenon, Erechtheion, and the grand Propylaea entrance, my personal favourite for its incredible city views

Explore Anafiotika (10:30 – 10:45)

Nestled beneath the Acropolis, Anafiotika is a tiny neighbourhood that feels like a Cycladic island in the heart of Athens.

Whitewashed cube-shaped houses, stone steps, and flowering bougainvillea make it one of the city’s most picturesque spots.

Brunch in Plaka (10:45 – 12:00)

Anafiotika naturally leads you into Plaka, the city’s oldest and most charming neighbourhood.

With its pastel houses, winding cobblestone streets, and stunning views of the Acropolis above, wandering around Plaka and soaking up the atmosphere is one of the best free things to do in Athens.

Stop at a café or taverna for brunch – and if you haven’t tried it yet, don’t miss a Greek freddo espresso.

Hadrian’s Gate & Temple of Olympian Zeus (14:00 – 14:15)

Just a short walk from the Acropolis Museum, you’ll reach Hadrian’s Gate, an impressive marble arch built in 131 AD to honour Emperor Hadrian.

It’s completely free to admire and well worth the quick stop.

Behind it sits the Temple of Olympian Zeus, once one of the largest temples in the ancient world. Today, only a handful of its columns remain, and you can easily appreciate the site from the outside.

National Garden of Athens (14:15 – 15:00)

Changing of the guard at the Hellenic Parliament (15:00 – 15:15)

Every hour on the hour, the Evzones (the presidential guards) perform the ceremonial Changing of the Guard – a slow, highly synchronized ritual that lasts around 15 minutes.

• Metro Line 3 (Blue Line): €9 one-way, 40 minutes to Syntagma
• Airport Bus X95: €5.50, 60 minutes, direct to Syntagma
