Port Barton is a sleepy beach town located on Palawan’s western coast in the Philippines.

Although Port Barton has been growing in popularity in recent years, it hasn’t experienced an influx of tourism like other more popular destinations in Palawan.

This means Port Barton still retains its laidback vibe and slower pace of life.

The town is pretty undeveloped and the natural surroundings, from beaches to waterfalls, remain untouched and pristine.

Coconut Beach boasts one of the most beautiful coconut-fringed shorelines in the Philippines.

This Port Barton beach has a rustic feel and does not attract many tourists, making it one of the best things to do in Port Barton.

Where is Coconut Beach?

Port Barton is a small village located on the western coast of Palawan, in an area called San Vicente.

Coconut Beach is located a few kilometers from Port Barton Town.

How to get to Coconut Beach Port Barton

Coconut Beach in Port Barton is not difficult to reach. You have a couple of options depending on your preference.

This beach in Port Barton is located just a 15-minute walk from neighboring White Beach. I would therefore recommend visiting these two Port Barton beaches together.

By foot

Walking is the easiest way to reach Coconut Beach in Port Barton.

It takes about 30 minutes from Port Barton town through a jungle path and along the shoreline.

Starting from the main beach in Port Barton, walk as left along the beach as you can. Once you have reached the end, you will cross a little stream that runs into the sea.

Here, you should see the path in the bushes. You will then walk about 15 minutes through a jungle path. Essentially, you will be walking somewhat parallel to the beachfront.

You will then reach a small stretch of beach called Papaya Beach on Google Maps. There is a big building here which I believe was once a cafe, but when we visited (March 2023) it was closed.

You are now just around the bend from Coconut Beach.

You can either choose to follow the path left through the jungle to reach it via the road or if the tide is out, you can simply follow the shoreline around.

The former route is well-signposted. If you opt for the latter like we did, you might benefit from some water shoes to protect your feet.

On the way back, we opted for the road to return. As this runs above Coconut Beach, it provides a great view looking down onto the beach.

As with most destinations in the Philippines, the WiFi in Port Barton can be a little patchy and unreliable. For a stress-free trip, I would suggest getting a data plan with an Airalo eSIM.

By kayak

Renting a kayak would be the most fun way to reach Coconut Beach in Port Barton.

You can rent a kayak from Itaytay Beach in town for 500 PHP ($9) a day. Likewise, the accommodation I would recommend provides kayaks free for use. You can skip to it here.

This is not only a great way to reach Coconut Beach, but also the neighboring White Beach too. Kayaking is one of the best things to do in Port Barton.

You can also reach Coconut Beach in about 15 minutes with a scooter.

However, as soon as you get out of Port Barton town, the road quality deteriorates entirely. In fact, the road is pretty non-existent.

Less a road and more a rocky dirt track, with many potholes and extremely steep and bumpy in certain areas. I would only recommend this option if you are super confident on a bike.

We hired ours for 400 PHP ($7) per day.

Coconut Beach entrance fee

Like many beaches in the Philippines, Coconut Beach in Port Barton is private.

The entrance fee to White Beach is 50 PHP ($0.70).

If you have come from the road, there is a wooden shack selling refreshments just before you reach the beach. This is where you pay your entrance fee.

Note: be cautious of the owners of this beach. When we questioned the entrance fee, we found them to be very aggressive. I have read similar reviews online too.

Port Barton Beach: What to expect

As the name suggests, Coconut Beach has one of the most stunning coconut-lined shorelines I have ever seen.

With the dense coconut forest behind you and the calm clear waters in front of you, this is one of the most picturesque Port Barton beaches in the whole of Palawan.

The sands are not as white and powdery as neighboring White Beach, and some areas are dotted with rocks and seaweed.

However, you will certainly be able to find a clear spot to sunbathe and relax in this tropical setting. There is plenty of shade from the trees, but be sure to keep an eye out for falling coconuts.

Furthermore, this is not a great beach for swimming. The water is very shallow and rocky, so if you were hoping for a dip, I would recommend water shoes.

If Pig Beach in the Caribbean is high up on your bucket list, then Coconut Beach could be considered the Filipino version.

Whilst we were sunbathing, a group of pigs of varied sizes and colours emerged from the palm trees. This is not uncommon so be sure to keep an eye out for them when you visit.

There is no infrastructure here, which when combined with the coconut trees, gives this Port Barton beach an authentic tropical island feel.

The beach has a back-to-basics rustic feel and when we visited we were the only people there.

Coconut Beach in Port Barton does not attract many tourists, which makes the experience all the more special.

It is also a breathtaking spot to catch the sunset in Port Barton. I would recommend visiting nearby White Beach and then passing back through Coconut Beach for sunset on your way back.

Note: we did not see any dogs when we visited, but I have read online that there are sometimes stray/malnourished dogs here. This can be quite difficult to see, but feel free to bring some dog food if you can.

Where to stay in Port Barton

Port Barton is certainly not the destination for beachfront resorts and the luxury traveler. The island has a back-to-basics feel; hot water and fast wifi can be hard to come by.

I would suggest staying near the center, as most of the main Port Barton tourist spots can be reached on foot.

How to get to Port Barton

To reach Port Barton, first, you will have to fly to Puerto Princesa.

This is the main airport for the island of Palawan and can be reached from all popular destinations.

After reaching Puerto Princesa, Port Barton is very straightforward to reach.

The most common way is to book a shared mini-van. These depart from Puerto Princesa Airport and pass through Puerto Princesa town, before heading to Port Barton.

Is it worth visiting Port Barton?

Port Barton is most definitely worth visiting and deserves a spot on your Philippines itinerary.

Located halfway between Puerto Princesa and El Nido, Port Barton has not experienced the influx of tourism like its more popular neighbours.

This sleepy beach town therefore remains pretty undiscovered and untouched.

Two main dirt tracks run parallel through the center of town, with more and more delicious restaurants and homestays popping up each year.

However, Port Barton remains super laidback and undeveloped. It provides an authentic glimpse into a beautiful destination not yet overrun by tourism.

How long do you need in Port Barton?

I would say that 3 – 5 days is the ideal amount of time in Port Barton. There are many amazing things to do in Port Barton, such as pristine beaches, snorkeling, and waterfalls.

With many white-sand paradisiacal islands and snorkeling spots dotted around Port Barton, island hopping is something you cannot miss.

In the modern world, it can be hard to find untouched natural beauty and an atmosphere of tranquility absent of tourists.

Therefore, whilst you can visit the main tourist spots in a couple of days, be sure to leave some extra time to relax and enjoy the slower pace of life.
