Athens to Poros: Overview
Poros Island is just 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Athens, and forms part of the Saronic Islands.
The Saronic Islands, including Poros, Aegina, Spetses, and Hydra, are the most convenient islands to reach from Athens.
This makes them perfect for a quick weekend getaway or for those looking to escape the hustle and bustle of the city.
You can reach Poros Island by –
🚤 Direct ferry from Piraeus (Athens’ main port)
🚗 Car + short ferry via the Peloponnesian town of Galatas
The quickest and most affordable way to reach Poros Island is by direct ferry from Athens (book here) – this is the way I would recommend.

Athens to Poros: By Ferry
When taking a ferry from Athens to Poros, you will depart from Piraeus Port, about 40 minutes from the city center.
👉 from central Athens, you take the Metro Line 1 (green) to Piraeus station. From the station, there’s a 5-minute walk to the port. This journey costs €1.20
There are four main companies that operate the Athens to Poros route –
- Saronic Ferries (conventional)
- Blue Star Ferries (high-speed)
- Alpha Lines (high-speed)
- Hellenic Seaways (high-speed)

💰Cost: €17 – €40 one way
👉 many ferries stop at Aegina and Agistiri on route to Poros – be sure to check your ticket beforehand
Piraeus to Poros Ferry Timetable
Ferries to Poros from Athens run all day, every day. There are roughly 7 departures per day.
There is no set Piraeus to Poros timetable – the first ferry departs at 8:00 AM and the final ferry at 6:00 PM.

How much is the ferry from Athens to Poros?
The Athens to Poros ferry price entirely depends on which company you book with, and whether you opt for the conventional or high-speed ferry.

How long is the ferry from Athens to Poros?
The Athens to Poros journey time also depends on the company and ferry you opt for.

🚢 Regular ferry: 2.5 hours
Athens Airport to Poros
There is no direct ferry from Athens Airport to Poros – either way, you’ll have to get to Piraeus Port.
From Athens Airport, you can take Metro Line 3 (blue line) all the way to Piraeus. It takes around 1 hour and costs €9.
👉 regular metro tickets for Athens do not work to and from the airport – make sure you buy the correct ticket to avoid a fine

Athens to Poros: By Car (via Galatas)
If you prefer a road trip, you can also reach Poros via the mainland.
However, this journey will take much longer and is not what I would recommend.
You can drive or take a bus from Athens to Galatas (located on the Peloponnese mainland), and from Galatas, there is a short 5-minute ferry across to Poros.
It’s a scenic drive through the Peloponnese, passing small towns and olive groves – ideal if you want to explore more of Greece’s mainland, or avoid long ferry journeys.

Athens to Galatas
Galatas is located roughly 180 km (112 miles) from Athens.
You have two options –
🚗 Drive yourself
🚌 Take a bus (one daily departure at 16:30, costs €16 )
The journey time takes roughly 2.5 – 3 hours.
Galatas to Poros
Once you’ve reached Galatas, there is just a short ferry ride over to Poros Island.
The Galatas to Poros ferry runs every 15 – 30 minutes.

Where To Stay in Poros
Poros is made up of two interconnected islands.
The smaller island, where the ferry docks, is home to Poros Town – the hub for restaurants, cafes, and bars.
The larger island is where you’ll find most of the beaches, hotels, and resorts, as well as a much more tranquil atmosphere.
I would personally recommend staying on the larger island and walking into Poros Town.
However, no matter where you stay in Poros, you are guaranteed great value and breathtaking sea views.

Sirene Blue Luxury Resort
If you’re looking for a luxurious resort with outstanding amenities, look no further than Sirene Blue Luxury Resort.

This is where I stayed in Poros, and you simply cannot beat it for value.


Each room comes with a private balcony, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. It’s one of the best views I’ve ever seen from a hotel.
Panorama Apartments are located just above Askeli Bay, so while extremely conveniently located, they still boast a tranquil sense of seclusion.
