Is Poros Worth Visiting: Overview

Poros may be one of Greece’s lesser-known islands, but that’s exactly what makes it so special.

With its beautiful beaches, lush pine forests, and charming old town, it has something for every kind of traveller – whether you’re into history, adventure, or simply relaxing by the sea.

Unlike many of Greece’s more famous islands, Poros remains blissfully uncrowded.

You can soak up its natural beauty without the crowds, enjoy far better value for money, and experience a more authentic, laidback side of Greek island life.

It’s also incredibly easy to reach from Athens, making it an ideal weekend getaway or the perfect addition to a longer Greece itinerary.

Poros might not have the wild nightlife or lively atmosphere of other popular Greek islands – but that’s exactly the point.

What I Loved About Poros: Why It’s Worth Visiting

Below are the things I loved about Poros Island, and the main reasons it deserves a spot on your Greece itinerary.

Accessibility

Poros is surprisingly easy to reach, with regular ferries departing from Piraeus Port in Athens.

The journey takes just 1–2 hours, making it an ideal weekend escape or a quick break from the city’s hustle and bustle.

The ferry docks right in Poros Town, and from there, most sights, beaches, and restaurants are within walking distance.

Beautiful beaches

Being made up of two islands (one smaller & one larger), Poros certainly isn’t short of beautiful beaches.

While most are pebbly, they’re incredibly picturesque, ranging from hidden coves framed by lush pine trees to more organized beaches offering watersports and activities.

My personal favorites were Kanali Beach and Russian Bay.

Fewer crowds & laidback atmosphere

Compared to other popular Greek islands like Mykonos or Santorini, Poros attracts significantly fewer tourists.

This means that the atmosphere is much more laidback and relaxed, offering a more authentic glimpse into local Greek life.

I visited in June, right in peak season, and there were even moments when I had entire beaches all to myself – a rare luxury on most Greek islands!

Value for money

I was blown away by how affordable Poros was.

Perhaps because it sees fewer tourists, accommodation, food, and activities are far cheaper than on more popular Greek islands.

During my stay, I enjoyed two charming boutique hotels that were high quality without breaking the bank, and savored delicious meals in local tavernas at very reasonable prices.

Picturesque town

Poros Town itself is a delight to explore.

Narrow streets, colourful buildings, and a bustling waterfront make it the perfect place for a leisurely stroll or sunset drinks.

Visiting the Clock Tower as the sun dips below the horizon is one of the best things to do in Poros.

Historical element

Despite its small size, Poros is packed with cultural and historical sights worth exploring.

From the fascinating Temple of Poseidon to the scenic Russian Bay, the island offers plenty for those who tire quickly of lounging on the beach.

What I didn’t love about Poros

Below are a few drawbacks of visiting Poros in Greece, worth bearing in mind for your trip.

Limited nightlife

This did not bother me, but if you’re looking for late-night bars, parties, and clubs, Poros is not the place.

Evenings here are low-key and relaxed, with just a handful of bars and restaurants staying open late.

You’ll easily find buzzing spots for sunset cocktails or post-dinner drinks, but if you’re hoping to dance into the early hours, you’re better off heading to one of the livelier Greek islands.

No public transport

This was the main drawback of Poros for me, as it made getting around slightly more difficult.

There is no public transport on the island, or it is extremely limited if there is. This means you either have to walk everywhere or hire a scooter or a quad bike.

For most people, hiring a scooter or a quad bike is no problem, as they are super affordable and available across the island. But unfortunately, I do not drive.

However, even without transport, Poros is extremely walkable, and I went everywhere on foot.

From the bigger island (where your hotel will likely be) to Poros Town, the walk is about 20 minutes.

If you want to explore some beaches further afield, you can expect to walk about an hour in each direction – but this is a beautifully scenic walk.

Where to stay in Poros

Poros is made up of two interconnected islands.

The smaller island, where the ferry docks, is home to Poros Town – the hub for restaurants, cafes, and bars.

The larger island is where you’ll find most of the beaches, hotels, and resorts, as well as a much more tranquil atmosphere.

I would personally recommend staying on the larger island and walking into Poros Town.

However, no matter where you stay in Poros, you are guaranteed great value and breathtaking sea views.

Sirene Blue Luxury Resort

If you’re looking for a luxurious resort with outstanding amenities, look no further than Sirene Blue Luxury Resort.

Every corner of the resort boasts a breathtaking ocean backdrop, including private balconies in all the rooms.

As well as their own area of private beach, Sirene has two pools, a spa, and a wide range of activities including tennis, mini golf, yoga, and water sports.

Prices start from €230 per night.

Aegean Villas

Aegean Villas is where to stay in Poros if you’re looking for a stunning beachfront escape.

Conveniently located on Askeli Beach, these self-catering apartments are perfect for travellers who want to be close to the action, without compromising on luxury.

Prices start from €150 per night.

Panorama Apartments

This is where I stayed in Poros, and you simply cannot beat it for value.

Each room comes with a private balcony, as well as a fully-equipped kitchen. It’s one of the best views I’ve ever seen from a hotel.

Panorama Apartments are located just above Askeli Bay, so while extremely conveniently located, they still boast a tranquil sense of seclusion.

Prices start from €40 per night.

How to get to Poros

Poros Island is just 58 km (36 miles) southwest of Athens, and getting to the island is super straightforward.

The quickest way to get from Athens to Poros is via a direct ferry from Piraeus Port –

If you prefer to make the majority of the journey by land, you can also get to Poros via Galatas.

You can drive or take a bus from Athens to Galatas (located on the Peloponnese mainland), and from Galatas, there is a short 5-minute ferry across to Poros.

However, due to the long journey time, this is not the way I would recommend.

FAQs

Is Aegina or Poros better?

This question is difficult to answer, as it depends on what you’re looking for.

I actually visited both Poros and Aegina, and while each has its own charm, I personally preferred Poros for its more relaxed atmosphere and beautiful scenery.

Aegina’s town is more developed and lively, and a great option for a day trip from Athens. It’s also a must if you’re a fan of pistachios.

However, Aegina is much bigger and its attractions are more spread out.

Poros, on the other hand, feels more compact, making it easy to explore, and its beaches are far more picturesque.

Both islands have historical landmarks, but if you’re seeking beautiful scenery and a laidback vibe, Poros is the better choice.

How long to spend in Poros?

I spent 4 days in Poros, and I’d say that 2-3 days is the ideal amount of time to explore at a relaxed pace.

Is Poros a nice island to visit?

Poros is a beautiful island to visit, with stunning beaches, lush pine forests, and a slower pace compared to other Greek islands.

Fewer tourists, great value for money, and easy access from Athens only add to its allure.

Is Poros lively?

If we’re comparing Poros to other popular party islands in Greece, then it is extremely relaxed.
