Planning a visit to Siargao’s iconic Maasin River?
In this guide, I’ll reveal everything I wish I had known before visiting, including the best way to get there, whether a tour is worth it, and the cost breakdown.
Siargao Island is widely known as the surfing capital of the Philippines and images of white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters undoubtedly spring to mind.
However, there is so much more to discover beyond the waves. If you’re like me and love uncovering unique spots, this inland gem is a must-visit spot.
Perhaps you’re looking for something different from the usual beach days? Or maybe you are curious about non-surfing activities in Siargao?
Either way, the Maasin River promises an unforgettable adventure, with a jumping platform and secret lagoon adding the perfect finishing touches.
Keep reading as I share everything you need to know to plan your trip, including tips I learned firsthand to make your visit incredible.

โ If you prefer to visit with a tour, I’d recommend this one
How to get to the Maasin River
The Maasin River is located about 25 minutes from General Luna by scooter.
To reach it, check out the Google Maps location ‘Maasin River Bridge’ or follow these steps –
- Take the main road out of General Luna heading towards Dapa
- Take a right on the Siargao Circumferential Road
- Follow this road until you reach the Maasin River (red bridge)
Tip: most of the main tourist spots in Siargao can be reached by following the Siargao Circumferential Road around the island
When visiting the Maasin River, you will drive past Coconut Viewdeck and down Coconut Road.
I would recommend combining all three of these Siargao tourist spots and creating your own DIY land tour – Coconut Road and Coconut Viewdeck are completely free!

What to expect
Once a quaint little town, iconic images of the bent palm tree have turned Maasin into a must-visit tourist spot in recent years.
The bent palm tree sticking out of the lush jungle has become a symbol of Siargao’s natural beauty.
Furthermore, exploring the island’s inland gems is a welcome change from beach bumming and island hopping.
Compared to bustling General Luna, the town Maasin has a distinctly local feel. There are a few little restaurants if you work up an appetite.
Prefer to visit with a tour? I’d recommend the Siargao Land Tour – includes the main highlights, as well as rountrip transport and lunch (from $30)
Entrance fee
There is no entrance fee for the Maasin River
However, to use the jumping platform the entrance is 20 PHP ($0.35) for unlimited jumps.
If you wish to cruise up the river to the secret lagoon in a canoe, a guide will take you for 550 PHP ($10) per boat.

Opening times
The Maasin River Siargao is open from 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM.
Since I visited in 2023, the Maasin River has become an even more popular tourist spot in Siargao and is certainly no longer an inland hidden gem.
This means that it can get a little busy at times, especially when the tour groups visit from 10 AM – 2 PM.
To avoid this and experience the Maasin River in the most authentic way possible, I’d recommend coming early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
We went at about 3:00 PM and were basically the only people there.
Things to do at Maasin River
- Jumping platform
- Canoe trip to Secret Lagoon
- Paddle in the water
You may have heard of the Tarzan-esque rope swing, which used to be the name on Google Maps.
Unfortunately, the rope swing was destroyed in a typhoon and is no longer here. It was also damaging the palm tree.
However, for those who are in search of a bit of adrenaline-fuelled fun, you can rest assured.
The swing has been replaced with a jumping platform and the river is deep enough, making this a great adventure spot in Siargao.
Tip: be sure to check the depth of the water yourself, and always ask the friendly locals
You’re welcome to just have a paddle and use the jumping platform, but for those who want to appreciate the river in all its glory, I would recommend the canoe tour with one of the locals.
Secret Lagoon Siargao
This scenic tour will take you up the river through the dense palm trees to a beautiful little lagoon.
This is known as Secret Lagoon and is one of the clearest I’ve ever seen!
The price of the boat was 550 PHP ($10) for 3/4 people and the whole trip lasted just over an hour.
Make sure to bring your swimwear, a wet bag, and a waterproof phone case. Like most places in the Philippines, you’re bound to get wet!
Should I visit the Maasin River with a tour?
As a budget backpacker, I do not think you need to visit the Maasin River with a tour.
However, consider the pros and cons of visiting with a tour below –
Pros
- Hassle-free, roundtrip transport included
- Visit other popular nearby attractions
- Meet other travelers
โ CHECK OUT THIS HIGHLY RATEDTOUR
Cons
- Easy accessible with scooter / tricycle
- Very cheap
- No time restraints (cannot visit Secret Lagoon with tour)
- Nearby attractions Coconut Road & Viewdeck are FREE
Overall, if you prefer to save money and explore at your own pace, I’d recommend a DIY land tour of the Maasin River, Coconut Road & Coconut Viewdeck.

What is the best month to visit Siargao?
The best time to visit Siargao would be the dry season, from March to October.
This is peak season in Siargao and you are (nearly always) guaranteed lovely weather and a buzzing atmosphere.
If you are a keen surfer, then the best time to visit would be August- November, which is when the waves are at their highest.
Whilst Siargao is hot all year round, the rainiest months are December and January.
Whenever you decide to visit, this is a tropical island so always come prepared. I visited in April and we had a few days of heavy rain.
Need a SIM? When traveling the WiFi can be a little patchy and unreliable. For a stress-free trip, I would recommend getting an Airalo eSIM in advance.
How many days do you need in Siargao?
I would recommend a minimum of 4 days in Siargao to enjoy all of the island and land activities on offer.
As well as the land activities above, you cannot miss a trip to Pamomoan Beach & Sugba Lagoon and Island Hopping.
If you have a little more time, I would definitely recommend staying at least a week.
This would give you time for activities but also for enjoying the laid-back beach vibe and surfing at one of Siargaoโs top beaches.
For those who like to party, staying a week would give you the time to check out Siargao’s nightlife scene too, which is well worth the hangover!

Is Siargao worth it?
Siargao was my favourite island in the Philippines and deserves a spot on your Philippines itinerary.
The islandโs laidback vibe and raw unspoiled nature will be sure to captivate you and leave you wanting more, even if youโre not into surfing.
Great for adventure seekers, nature lovers, party animals, and beach bums, there is something for every type of traveler and budget.
Whilst Siargao is becoming a number-one tourist destination in the Philippines, it still possesses a rustic charm and a slower pace of life.
