Siargao Island is widely known as the surfing capital of the Philippines. Its breathtaking waves attract surfers from all over the world.
Undoubtedly, when picturing Siargao, many think of white-sand beaches, surfers, and perhaps the famous Sugba Lagoon.
However, lesser-known is that Siargao boasts some pretty unique land tourist spots too.
Perhaps you’ve overdosed on vitamin sea and crave a change from island hopping?
Or maybe you’re not into surfing and are wondering what other things Siargao has to offer?
Visiting the Maasin River and its iconic bent palm tree is one of the best things to do in Siargao for adventure lovers and those looking for a change of scenery.
In this post, we will cover everything you need to know about the Maasin River & Secret Lagoon for an unforgettable day.
How to get to the Maasin River Siargao
The Maasin River is located only 25 minutes from General Luna by scooter.
To reach the Maasin River, you can follow the Google Maps location below. You will take the main road out of General Luna heading towards Dapa.
You will then take a right onto the Siargao Circumferential Road and follow this road until you reach the river.
Most of the main tourist spots in Siargao can be reached by following this round around the island.
When visiting the Maasin River, you will drive past Coconut Viewdeck and through Coconut Road.

Once you reach the red bridge, you are in the right place. You can park up here and make your way down the steps under the bridge to the river.
This means that all three of these Siargao tourist spots can be visited easily as part of a DIY land tour.
How to get around Siargao
The best way to get around Siargao is with a scooter. This gives you so much freedom to explore the whole island.
A scooter will set you back roughly 300 PHP ($5) per day. This is what we paid for one week.
The price ultimately depends on your bargaining skills and how long you would like to rent for – the longer you want the bike for, the cheaper it will be.
If you are not confident on a bike, then you can take a tricycle to the Maasin River. You should pay no more than 400 PHP ($7) for the round trip.
Likewise, if you decide to go on an organised tour, then this will have transport included.

Maasin River entrance fee
Just to use the jumping platform, the entrance is 20 PHP ($0.35) for unlimited jumps.
If you wish to cruise up the river to the secret lagoon in a canoe, a guide will take you for 550 PHP ($10) per boat.
What to expect
A quaint little river in the town of Maasin has become a number-one Siargao tourist spot in recent years.
The iconic images of the bent palm tree sticking out of the dense tropical forest have given this place its fame.
Visiting the Maasin River is one of the most unique things to do in Siargao. Especially if you have tired from beach bumming or you’re not into surfing.
Things to do at Maasin River
- Jumping platform
- Canoe trip to Secret Lagoon
- Paddle in the water
You may have heard of the Tarzan-esque rope swing, which is the name on Google Maps. Unfortunately, during the most recent typhoon, the rope swing was destroyed so it is no longer here.
However, for those who are in search of a bit of adrenaline-fuelled fun, you can rest assured.
The swing has been replaced with a jumping platform and the river is deep enough, making this a great adventure spot in Siargao.
You’re welcome to just have a paddle and use the jumping platform, but for those who want to appreciate the river in all its glory, I would recommend the canoe tour with one of the locals.
As with most destinations in the Philippines, the WiFi in Siargao can be a little patchy and unreliable. For a stress-free trip, I would suggest getting a data plan with an Airalo eSIM.
Secret Lagoon Siargao
This scenic tour will take you up the river through the dense palm trees to a beautiful little lagoon. This is known as Secret Lagoon and is one of the clearest I’ve ever seen!
The price of the boat was 550 PHP ($10) for 3/4 people and the whole trip lasted just over an hour.
Make sure to bring your swimwear, a wet bag, and a waterproof phone case. Like most places in the Philippines, you’re bound to get wet!

Maasin River opening times
The Maasin River Siargao is open 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM.
The Maasin River can get a little busy at times, so I would recommend either coming early in the morning or later in the afternoon.
We went at about 3:00 PM and were basically the only people there.
The locals here are super friendly and there are a few restaurants around if you work up an appetite.

What is the best month to visit Siargao?
The best time to visit Siargao would be the dry season, from March to October.
This is peak season in Siargao and you are (nearly always) guaranteed lovely weather and a buzzing atmosphere.
If you are a keen surfer, then the best time to visit would be August- November, which is when the waves are at their highest.
Whilst Siargao is hot all year round, the rainiest months are December and January.
Whenever you decide to visit, this is a tropical island so always come prepared. I visited in April and we had a few days of heavy rain.
How many days do you need in Siargao?
I would recommend a minimum of 4 days in Siargao to enjoy all of the island and land activities on offer.
As well as the land activities above, you cannot miss a trip to Pamomoan Beach & Sugba Lagoon and Island Hopping.
If you have a little more time, I would definitely recommend staying at least a week.
This would give you time for activities but also for enjoying the laid-back beach vibe and surfing at one of Siargao’s top beaches.
For those who like to party, staying a week would give you the time to check out Siargao’s nightlife scene too, which is well worth the hangover!
