Perhaps you’re looking for the best sunset spot in Udaipur? Or maybe you would like to admire the architectural magnificence of the Old City and its famous landmarks from above?
Or perhaps you want the Hindu goddess Karni Mata to fulfill your hopes and dreams?
The Karni Mata Temple on Machala Magra Hill is a significant historical and spiritual site for the people of Udaipur.
The Karmi Mata Ropeway is the first of its kind and has made this temple accessible to the general public.
Due to the stunning views of Udaipur from above, this has become a must-visit Udaipur tourist spot in recent years.
Whether you’re interested in visiting the temple or simply want to enjoy the spectacular views, this post will detail everything you need to know to visit the Karni Mata Ropeway & Temple, updated for 2024.
Karni Mata Temple History
Maharana Karan Singh laid the foundations of the Karni Mata Temple between the years 1620 and 1628.
The idea was to provide a place of worship for the newly created residential area on top of Machala Magra hill.
However, the temple gradually became derelict, frequented by few devotees. This was until 2008 when the ropeway cable car was commissioned to connect the general public with the shrine to worship Karni Mata.
How long is the ropeway in Udaipur?
This Udaipur cable car is approximately 387 meters long. It is the first ropeway transportation in Rajasthan and connects Deendayal Udaphyay Park to the Karni Mata Temple.
Karni Mata Hindu Warrior Goddess
Karni Mata was born around 1387 AD in Western Rajasthan as part of the Rajput Charan caste. She is believed to be the reincarnation of the Hindu warrior goddess Durga, representing power and victory.
Through her celibate and frugal lifestyle, Karni Mata played a significant role in history. She has come to represent Rajput hegemony and unity in the region.
Karni Mata is worshipped as a spiritual symbol and peaceful protector of the community. She watches over it to ensure its survival during turbulent times.
Furthermore, it is believed that Karni Mata revived her dead son who was then reincarnated as a rat. This is the same fate enjoyed by her whole family, who are said to have also reincarnated as rats to stick together after death.
According to legend, if you visit the temple twice a day, once in the morning and once in the evening, Karni Mata will fulfill all of your hopes and dreams.
Are there rats in Karni Mata Temple Udaipur?
Due to the popular legend, the temple is also home to many rats. As these rats are seen as Karni Mata’s reincarnated family members, it brings good fortune to feed them.
There is also a myth surrounding the white rats, which are seen as extra lucky and you are fortunate to catch a glimpse.

How to get there
Reaching the Karni Mata Ropeway ticket office is very straightforward from Udaipur city center, just a short walk away.
From the City Palace following the Google Maps location, it takes about 20 minutes to reach the ropeway by foot. The final part of the walk offers stunning views of Lake Pichola and Doodh Talai Lake.
If you choose to take a rickshaw from the city center, this should set you back no more than 100 INR ($1.20).
When you arrive, this is where you’ll purchase your ticket for the ropeway. However, if you decide to walk to reach the temple, you can find the path in Deendayal Udaphyay Park.
This is a great option for those seeking a more spiritual experience. For those who prefer to bask in the tranquility and solitude of the pilgrimage and connect with nature on a deeper level.
How many steps are there in Karni Mata Temple Udaipur?
To reach the Karni Mata Temple from Deendayal Udaphyay Park there are about 800 well-maintained steps.
What to expect
Appreciating the view from the Karni Mata Temple is one of the best things to do in Udaipur.
After purchasing your ticket, you will be directed to wait your turn for the ropeway. Things work on a first come first served basis and you have to wait for your number to be called.
There is a pleasant waiting area with seats, toilets, and small shops to buy snacks or refreshments.
We waited about 30 minutes for them to call our number. The cabins can fit about six people and the journey up takes 4 -5 minutes.
I would recommend sitting on the left-hand side for the ascent. This offers sweeping views of the Old City and Lake Pichola whilst going up.
Karni Mata Udaipur Ropeway Ticket Price
The Karni Mata Ropeway price is 300 INR ($3.60) for foreigners and 87 INR ($1) for Indians, both ways.
If there is a small group of you, I would recommend paying for a private cabin, which is 800 INR ($9.60).

This is one of the best views in Udaipur and a famous sunset viewpoint. If you are lucky enough to visit as the sun is setting, you can admire the changing colours of the sky and the mesmerising reflection over the lakes.
Staying for sunset also allows you to witness the day to night and how the city lights sparkle as the sun goes down.
The view from the top of Machala Magra Hill is truly spectacular. The architectural magnificence of the Old City, the natural beauty of its weaving lakes, all with a stunning backdrop of the Aravali Mountains.
The greenery and natural beauty contrast perfectly with the vibrancy and liveliness of the Old City.
From here you can appreciate some of the best Udaipur tourist spots and iconic landmarks from a different perspective.
The Karni Mata Temple itself you will have to walk a further couple of minutes to reach. It holds a mystical aura and a stone idol of Karni Mata herself, beautifully decorated and imposing.
As well as the temple, there are also a couple of restaurants selling food, desserts, and refreshments.
The ticket system on a first come first served basis works the same going down, but we waited only 10 minutes for a cabin.
