San Pedro | Best for backpackers
San Pedro is where to stay in Lake Atitlan if you want to be in the middle of the action.
With a reputation as a ‘backpacker’ town, San Pedro is known for its budget-friendly accommodation, laidback vibe, and buzzing nightlife scene.

Before visiting, I was worried that San Pedro would lack authenticity. I was pleasantly surprised and ended up staying two weeks.
While there are many delicious Western-inspired restaurants, cafes, and bars along the shoreline, the further up the hill you venture the more local the vibe becomes.

San Pedro is also a perfect base to explore the lake, with direct connections to Panajachel and a short boat trip to all other towns.
This Lake Atitlan town is also the perfect jump-off point for nearby hikes, such as San Pedro Volcano & Rostro Maya (Indian Nose).
Who will love it: backpackers, budget travelers, food lovers, party-goers, hikers, and those who want convenience with tours & transport
Who will hate it: lovers of peace & quiet, those searching for a more authentic local experience, off-the-beaten-path travelers
Things to do in San Pedro
There is always a buzzing atmosphere in San Pedro, and there is no shortage of amazing things to do –
- Kayaking or SUPs (we hired ours here)
- Hike nearby San Pedro Volcano or Rostro Maya (Indian Nose)
- Take a Mayan cooking class (check out this one)
- Visit the Museo Tzunun’ Ya’ to learn more about the Tz’utujil people
- Attend Spanish School (including homestay)

Where to stay in San Pedro La Laguna
From lake view resorts to budget bunks, San Pedro is one of the most affordable and well-connected places to stay in Lake Atitlan.
As a rule of thumb, if you stay in the center, you can expect things to be pretty loud at night. Stay a little further out for more peace and tranquility.
Amigos
One of my favorite hostels ever and super affordable with dorms for just 60Q ($8) per night.

- Social but not a party hostel
- Two rooftops with amazing views of Lake Atitlan
- Centrally located with a choice of dorms or private rooms
Mr Mullet’s
Guatemala’s most iconic party hostel and the best place to meet other backpackers.
- Ultimate social hostel to meet fellow travelers (pub crawls, beer pong, boat parties, quizzes)
- Centrally located minutes from the dock
- Dorms with free pancakes & tea/coffee in the morning
Sababa Resort
One of the best San Pedro resorts for luxury travelers and bougie backpackers.

- Choice of lake view suites or shared dormitories
- Exceptional amenities (spa, swimming pool, wellness center)
- Delicious restaurant with (the best) free buffet breakfast
Panajachel | Best for first-timers
Panajachel is known as the ‘Gateway to Lake Atitlan’. It is the main transport hub and where you will most likely be dropped off.
It is the best Lake Atitlan town for first-timers who prioritize accessibility and a wide range of amenities.
You will find pharmacies, ATMs, and great boat connections. It is also the best place to book activities, tours, or onward shuttles.
The main street is catered to tourism, with souvenir stalls, many Western-inspired restaurants, and a great nightlife scene.
However, this Lake Atitlan town can get busy and is full of tourists. Compared to other villages, the town itself is not very picturesque.
Who will love it: families with kids, shopaholics, ‘holidayers’ not travelers, those fond of home comforts, sunset chasers, nature lovers, adventure seekers
Who will hate it: lovers of peace & quiet, those searching for a more authentic local experience, those who don’t like persistent vendors trying to sell you things, off-the-beaten-path travelers
Things to do in Panajachel
There are many cool things to do in Panajachel, and it is the best place to book activities on the lake –
- Visit Lake Atitlan’s largest central market & shop for handicrafts
- Explore the Atitlan Nature Reserve (waterfall, ziplines, hanging bridges, butterfly garden)
- Paragliding (check out Realworld Paragliding)
- Watch the sunset from Ente Rooftop Restaurant

Where to stay in Panajachel
Panajachel has a wide range of lakeside hotels and affordable hostels, perfect for any budget.
Like San Pedro, staying near the center is convenient but can be loud at night. Stay a little further out for peace and quiet.
Socialtel Atitlan
The best option for bougie backpackers and digital nomads.
- Choice of private rooms or dorms
- Amazing amenities (swimming pool, movie room, lakeview yoga, communal kitchen)
- Exceptional coworking space
Dreamboat Hostel

- Extraordinary rooftop, with a swim-up bar, gym, and two decks overlooking the lake

Hotel Atitlan
This stunning hacienda-style hotel was once a coffee plantation. It is the best Panajchel hotel for families or the luxury traveler.
- Private rooms with private balconies overlooking the lake
- Exceptional amenities and grounds (pool, botanical gardens, delicious restaurant)
- Modern comforts with traditional aesthetics, all locally sourced decor
San Juan | Best for art & culture
San Juan is quite possibly the most picturesque of all the Lake Atitlan towns.
Located just 10 minutes from popular San Pedro, San Juan attracts fewer tourists and has a much more peaceful vibe.

San Juan is a significant artistic hub and is known for its weaving cooperatives, art galleries, and unique handicrafts. The town works hard to preserve its Mayan traditions.
It is dotted with colorful murals telling the story of the Tz’utujil people, offering an authentic glimpse into Indigenous culture.

The streets come alive with vibrant displays of creativity, such as Umbrella Street, which offers both artistic charm and Instagram-worthy backdrops.
However, this is a local town and it can be a little quiet in the evenings. Fortunately, San Pedro is only around the corner if you’re in the mood for bars and socializing.
Who will love it: art fanatics, lovers of textiles, shopaholics, history and culture enthusiasts interested in Indigenous traditions, slow travelers, and eco-conscious travelers
Who will hate it: party seekers, those looking to socialize and meet other travelers, and luxury travelers
Things to do in San Juan
Many of the best things to do in San Juan are centered on art and a deeper understanding of Tz’utujil culture –
- Stroll down Calle de Sombreros & Calle de Paraguas
- Visit San Juan Bautista Church
- Short hike to Mirador Kiaq’Aiswaan viewpoint
- Shops for handicrafts (the best place for souvenir shopping)
- Take a weaving (Casa Flor Ixcaco) or painting workshop (Tinte Maya)
- Hike nearby Rostro Maya (Indian Nose)

Where to stay in San Juan
San Juan is a local town, and there are significantly fewer accommodation options.
If you were hoping to stay with a local family in a homestay, this is a great town to do it.
Alternatively, the few hotel and hostel options are all locally run, eco-conscious, and have a distinctly homely vibe to them.
Posada Mana
This affordable hostel is run by a lovely local family and is where we stayed in San Juan.

- Centrally located with a choice of private rooms or dorms
- Easy booking of activities & tours (Indian Nose, nearby hikes, kayaking)
- Beautiful rustic gardens with hammocks
Eco Hotel Uxlabil Atitlan
A gorgeous eco-hotel with amazing views of Lake Atitlan.
- Private rooms with a balcony, hammock, and lake views, with free breakfast included
- Free kayak use & spa services are available
- Tranquil location 15 minutes from the center of San Juan
Jaibalito | Best for tranquility & views
Jaibalito is the smallest Lake Atitlan village. It is known for its peaceful atmosphere and breathtaking views.
As it can only be accessed by boat, Jaibailito has a secluded charm that sets it apart from the other Lake Atitlan towns.
It is the best place to get off the beaten track, enjoy tranquility, and appreciate traditional Guatemalan village life.
Who will love it: nature lovers, hikers, those looking for peace & quiet, off-the-beaten-path travelers, those wanting to disconnect & relax
Who will hate it: partygoers, foodies seeking variety, people looking to socialize, city dwellers, those who bore easily
Things to do in Jaibalito
Jaibalito is tiny, and there are not many things to do in the town itself –
- Hike to nearby Tzununa or Santa Cruz
- One of the cleanest places to swim in Lake Atitlan
- Appreciate traditional Guatemalan rural life

Where to stay in Jaibalito
There is one stand-out accommodation located in Jaibalito that you really can’t miss.
La Casa del Mundo is a total oasis of tranquility. In my opinion, it is the most stunning place to stay in Lake Atitlan.
La Casa del Mundo
Set into the cliff’s edge, this is arguably the most magical and unique Lake Atitlan accommodation.

- Gorgeous private rooms with balconies & lake views
- Traditional aesthetic with modern facilities (spa facilities, lakeview hot tub, lake access)
- Delicious on-site restaurant with family dinners
San Marcos | Best for spirituality & yoga
San Marcos is known as Lake Atitlan’s ‘hippie town’ and is a haven for the spiritual community.
Great infrastructure makes this the best town for travelers to learn about Indigenous ceremonial practices, with locals keen to share their ancestral wisdom.
It is also known for its delicious vegan food, yoga & meditation retreats, and holistic therapies. It is perfect for travelers seeking self-exploration and a deeper connection with nature.

Furthermore, San Marcos boasts some of the cleanest water in the area, particularly inside the Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve.
On the surface level, San Marcos and its ‘hippie highway’ feel a little commercialized and overrun with Western tourists.
While many traditional ceremonies are undoubtedly geared toward tourism, this in no way lessens the profound impact this ancient knowledge can have on the intentional traveler.
Who will love it: spiritual seekers, nature lovers, vegans/vegetarians, eco-conscious travelers, those interested in herbal medicine & traditional Mayan ceremonies, yoga practitioners
Who will hate it: those seeking an authentic Mayan town, individuals not interested in spirituality, off-the-beaten-path travelers
Things to do in San Marcos
Centered around nature and spirituality, there are many cool things to do in San Marcos –
- Enjoy lunch at a delicious vegan restaurant – I’d recommend Samsara’s Garden
- Browse & shop for local handicrafts
- Visit the Cerro Tzankujil Nature Reserve (swimming, sacred Mayan fire pits, 12-meter cliff jump)
- Take a yoga class or guided meditation
- Join a traditional cacao ceremony or temazcal sauna (Lava Love Cacao)

Where to stay in San Marcos
Whether it’s a hotel or hostel, most accommodations in San Marcos are committed to sustainability and have space to practice yoga.
The town itself is quiet, so wherever you stay, you are guaranteed peace and relaxation. This is also the best town to stay in if you’re hoping to swim in Lake Atitlan.
Lush Atitlan
One of the oldest establishments in town, this gorgeous family-run eco-hotel is a great option for couples.

- Creatively built into the mountainside – choice of rooms or suites overlooking Lake Atitlan
- Secluded & surrounded by lush greenery, but only a 5-minute walk from town
- Run by Guatemalans with deep knowledge of the area – Green Leader Award by TripAdvisor for environmental efforts
The Eagle’s Nest
An all-inclusive eco-lodging ideal for wellness retreats & yoga practitioners.
- A choice of suites, unique treehouses, or rooms, each with a balcony & lake views
- All lodgings include 3 homemade meals & 2 yoga classes per day
- Exceptional facilities – yoga classes, festivals & ceremonies, temazcal sauna
ATI Hostel & Beach Club
This waterfront hostel is an affordable option for budget backpackers looking to socialize.

- Choice of private rooms or dorms
- Great for socializing – fire pit, dance classes, live music
- Exceptional amenities & activities – sauna, SUPs, yoga & sun terrace overlooking the lake
Tzununa | Best for nature lovers
Tzununa is another one of the smallest villages around Lake Atitlan.
This hidden gem is rustic and underdeveloped but offers tranquility, natural beauty, and a more authentic glimpse into rural Guatemalan life.
Tzununa is mainly inhabited by the Kaqchikel Maya and a handful of expats who are dedicated to working in harmony with nature.

Tzununa is known for its community-driven sustainable projects and organic farming. It caters to travelers interested in permaculture, wellness, and herbal medicine.
Surrounded by lush green mountains, scenic hiking trails, and a nearby waterfall, Tzununa is a nature lover’s paradise.
If you’re drawn to the spiritual vibe of neighboring San Marcos, but prefer somewhere less commercialized to practice yoga or meditation, this is the place for you.
Who will love it: the same as those who would love San Marcos, but prefer a less commercialized experience, those interested in community projects, nature lovers
Who will hate it: “princesses”, those with high standards and a preference for comfort and convenience, party seekers, those who prefer a faster pace
Things to do in Tzununa
Many of the things to do in Tzununa center around nature, wellness, and simple living –
- Take a permaculture, herbology, or mushroom cultivation course
- Hike to Tzununa waterfall
- Practice yoga & meditation at a wellness retreat
- Hike to nearby Jaibalito or San Marcos
- Visit Granja Tzi’kin (farm-to-table restaurant, volunteering, farm tours, permaculture courses)

➡️ Recommend: The Ultimate Guide To Tzununa: Lake Atitlan’s Hidden Gem
Where to stay in Tzununa
Most accommodations in Tzununa double as wellness retreats, with exceptional facilities such as yoga shalas, temazcal saunas, and herbal gardens.
The tranquility of Tzununa means that wherever you stay, you are guaranteed a peaceful time.
Maya Moon Lodge
This beautiful waterfront Lake Atitlan accommodation is where I stayed in Tzununa.

- Choice of affordable private rooms or dorms (all with balconies & hammocks)

- Perfect place for retreats, workshops, or courses
Santa Cruz | Best for adventure & views
Santa Cruz is where to stay in Lake Atitlan for tranquility, scenic views, and adventure activities.
The small village has a more traditional feel than other bigger towns and has limited amenities. This means it attracts significantly fewer tourists.
As Santa Cruz is very hilly, it is known for its extraordinary viewpoints that offer sweeping views of Lake Atitlan – I personally think it has the best view out of all the towns.

As well as exploring the different viewpoints, Santa Cruz is a fantastic base for hiking to nearby towns, Jaibalito & Tzununa.
Santa Cruz is a hub for adventure activities, such as kayaking & SUPs. It is also home to the only dive center around Lake Atitlan.
It is a town of natural beauty, but its steep terrain and lack of infrastructure mean it may not be suitable for all travelers.
Who will love it: nature lovers, hikers, those searching for peace & tranquility, adventure seekers, free divers, off-the-beaten-path travelers
Who will hate it: partygoers, those looking for a social atmosphere, people with bad physical fitness, foodies seeking variety
Things to do in Santa Cruz
There are many amazing things to do in Santa Cruz, particularly for nature lovers & adventure seekers –
- Kayaking or SUPs on the lake
- Freedive with the only dive center in Lake Atitlan (ATI Divers)

Where to stay in Santa Cruz
There are not many places to stay in Santa Cruz.
Fortunately, the majority of accommodation is located near the waterfront, so you do not need to scale the hills to reach it.
In Santa Cruz, you are guaranteed a peaceful stay, with extraordinary views of Lake Atitlan.
Free Cerveza Hostel
Described as a summer camp for adults, this is one of the most unique hostels in Lake Atitlan.

- Choice of private rooms or shared glamping tents

- Choice of private rooms or dorms, with lounging areas & hammocks overlooking the lake
- Many activities – home of Ati Divers, SUPs, weaving & cooking classes, yoga, sauna
- Delicious restaurant with family dinners & happy hour each night, BBQ on Saturdays
Santa Catarina Palopó | Best for Mayan culture
Santa Catarina is located just next to the bustling Panajachel, but could not feel further away.
This charming traditional town is known for its vibrant display of indigenous culture and slower pace.
It is great for travelers looking to escape the more touristy parts of Lake Atitlan and learn more about Kaqchikel Maya culture.
The community-driven project Pintando Santa Catarina Palopó, designed to boost tourism, has really given this town its fame.
This project uses art to preserve and depict the town’s indigenous heritage, with brightly painted houses and murals telling the story of the Kaqchikel Maya.
Located just 10 minutes from Panajachel, this is an ideal place to stay in Lake Atitlan if you want to be near the center of the action, but are hoping for a more tranquil and authentic experience.
Who will love it: art fanatics, cultural enthusiasts, those interested in traditional Mayan culture & history, lovers of peace & quiet, those looking for a more authentic experience
Who will hate it: those who like to be in the middle of the action, party-goers, those hoping to socialize
Things to do in Santa Catarina Palopó
There are some fascinating things to do in Santa Catarina Palopo for cultural enthusiasts –
- Stroll around the colorful houses – there is a guided tour based on donation (here)
- Visit the Centro Comercial to learn more about projects & traditions
- Head to the viewpoint (Mirador de Santa Catarina)
- Explore the hot springs on the shoreline
Where to stay in Santa Catarina
There are not many places to stay in Santa Catarina Palopo.
Perhaps surprisingly, the main accommodation options are expensive resorts, catering to the luxury traveler or families on holiday.
It is the best place to stay if you want to be near the action of Panajachel, but prefer a much more peaceful experience.
Tzampoc Resort
One of the most stunning resorts in Lake Atitlan.

- Deluxe rooms or suites with terrace & lake views
- Exceptional facilities – an infinity pool overlooking the lake, hot tub, firewood sauna

Hotel Casa Palopo
Quite possibly the most luxurious and expensive resort in Lake Atitlan.
- Choice of villas, suites, or rooms, all with balconies
- Beautiful interior design – modern comforts with traditional decor
- Two swimming pools & amazing activities – bird watching, sound healing, yoga, shaman experience
Santiago Atitlan | Best for authenticity & history
Santiago Atitlan is one of the most authentic places to stay in Lake Atitlan.
Not only is it the biggest town around the lake, but it was the first to be founded in pre-Columbian times. It is the heart of the Tz’utujil Maya community and has played a crucial role in the region’s history.
Santiago is the center of worship for Maximon; a folk saint representing the blend of Maya spirituality and Catholicism.
The town is therefore a living testament to the unique blend of indigenous culture and colonial religious influences, making it a must-visit for culture and history enthusiasts.
You also cannot miss the vibrant market, showcasing a range of vibrant textiles, artwork, wood carvings, and pottery. The best days are Fridays and Sundays.
Things to do in Santiago Atitlan
Santiago Atitlan is full of many amazing things to do, particularly for history and culture enthusiasts –
- Visit the traditional market (every Friday & Sunday)

Where to stay in Santiago Atitlan
There are not many places to stay in Santiago Atitlan.
This is a local town, so the main accommodations are affordable homestays or eco-lodgings.
While Santiago Atitlan is peaceful and authentic, most travelers tend to visit on a day trip and stay in the neighboring town of San Pedro.
Hotel Bambu
This beautiful waterfront eco-hotel fused with the natural landscape is the best place to stay in Santiago.
- Rustic private bungalows with private terraces overlooking the lake
- Surrounded by lush gardens & a swimming pool
- Amazing activities for nature enthusiasts – hiking, bird watching
How to get to Lake Atitlan

Booking online is slightly more expensive but gives you peace of mind. If you prefer to book with a local tour agency I would recommend Marco.
